Local news…Garbage @ National 9/14/12

Awesome band Garbage will be performing at The National Theater in Richmond, Virginia on Friday Sept. 14th. Tickets are $25 in advance (plus service charge).

“Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson has said that the band’s forthcoming album, ‘Not Your Kind Of People’, has been inspired by David Bowie, Siouxsie Sioux, and Cocteau Twins.

When asked if ‘Not Your Kind Of People’ saw them looking toward any new influences, Manson said she had been looking back to “all these people that built my musical fabric”. Butch Vig added that he’d taken inspiration from prog rock and the first Suicide album.

After being asked what they had been up to since their 2005 album ‘Bleed Like Me’, Manson said: “I don’t really know what I’ve been doing… We spent our time living life, then [we were] ready to record a record and here we are!”

Garbage release their fifth album ‘Not Your Kind Of People’ on May 14. Recorded in Atwater Village in Los Angeles, the album has been produced by Garbage and mixed by the band’s drummer Butch Vig.” – NME

Garbage recently gave away a free song on iTunes called ‘Automatic Systematic Habit’ Here’s a preview –>

It seems someone up-loaded the full release here –>

Hip Music: Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror

Will Oldham circ. 1994

Found this hilarious Hipster song by Jeffrey Lewis when I did a search on iTunes for Will Oldham. If you’re not familiar with Will Oldham, he performs under the name Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy (and formerly as some variation of the name Palace. I know…it’s confusing…) He’s a singer/songwriter in the Americana style of indie music. (I highly recommend checking him out. He’s awesome.)

Will does not perform in the song, and is being represented with an actor.

Awesome Beastie Boy ‘Adrock’ videos

When MCA died I was searching the internet about him…

I came across these interviews with Adam ‘Adrock’ Horovitz talking about the origins of the Beastie Boys and the use of samplers and beat boxes. It was put out by the sample machine manufacturer Propellerhead.

Also posted were all the outtakes that ended up on the editing floor. This may even be better because it’s longer…

Hip Book review: Dads are the Original Hipsters

This book marks a milestone for Hipster Approved. It is the first review item I have had sent to me for review. I want to give a big ‘Thank You’ to Lorraine at Chronicle Books and the author Brad Getty for such a nice book.

That being said…the Hipster Seal of Approval can NOT be bought! My reviews are non-biased. I mean it!

Dads Are the Original Hipsters is a great book. It’s another in a series of books that started as a blog. A couple of other examples I can think of is Stuff White People Like and Look at this F*cking Hipster. (Both great books as well…).

People may think that the Hipster fashion movement is a new fad. This book proves that’s not true. Our Dads were sporting skinny jeans, deep v-neck t-shirts, and ironic mustaches while we were still crawling around in our diapers. Too bad our Dads didn’t have cool indie rock to listen to.

The only problem I have is that Brad hasn’t used the photo of a Hipster Dad I sent him. (Maybe he will in the future, I’ll keep checking back). What do you think…is this a picture of a Hipster? Remember this was taken in the early 60s or late 50s. Before Instagram used filters to make pictures look like this..

Six Pack

Your dad had a six pack before you did. But he didn’t pay to go to some expensive gym. He got his by working hard and kicking ass.

P.S. He was also rocking plaid shorts while you were still swimming around in his nut-sack.

RE: email from Jack White

Mugshot

Got this email from Jack White which is pretty good… His new solo release ‘Blunderbuss‘ is awesome, by the way!

In the email there’s a link to see Jack’s interview and performance on The Colbert Report, which is hilarious. I’m not really familiar with the show because I don’t have cable, but the interview is great. As well as all the other links on the email…

Anyway, here it is…

BLUNDERBUSS IS #1

Thanks to the fans for making Blunderbuss the #1 album in the US, UK, Canada. Portugal and Switzerland! If you haven’t purchased your copy yet, pop on over and grab one here.

In case you missed the live stream of Jack’s American Express Unstaged show at Webster Hall in NYC that was directed by Gary Oldman, you can still watch select performances, trailers and short films from the event here.

Jack stopped by the Colbert Report to visit his friend Stephen last week. Watch what happens when Stephen tries to interview Jack, followed by his performance of “Freedom at 21.”

This summer Jack will be performing at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, CO. Tickets are currently on sale for this August 8th show.

Don’t miss out on the Third Man Records video curation. Jack and his trusted sidekicks have pulled together a diverse assortment of clips highlighting the current scene in their home of Nashville, choice cuts from their Third Man stable and golden gems from Detroit greats. Dig in.

LIGHTNING BOLT VINYL & TOUR KICK-OFF TAILGATE

We would like to officially announce what we feel is one of the most beautiful and unique limited edition pieces of vinyl we’ve yet produced here at Third Man… The Jack White Blunderbuss Lightning Bolt Vinyl. Perfect in it’s simplicity, a regular black LP with a brilliant flash of blue vinyl running throughout, these LPs are some of the most striking and interesting records we have made due to the variations produced in each individual record. Every single record is, in it’s way, one of a kind.

In our ongoing quest to explore new and innovative distribution techniques, the Lightning Bolt Vinyl will only be available via the Third Man Rolling Record Store at Jack White live dates and other RRS apperances throughout the summer, while supplies last. We will limit the amount of Lightning Bolts sold at each location to 20 in order to more effectively spread these to different territories around the United States. They will remain on sale from the Rolling Record Store as long as supplies last..

Starting with Jack White’s upcoming tour beginning on May 15th, The Rolling Record Store will be at many locations around the States this summer. Here is a look at the next batch of appearances. Many more dates to be announced very soon.

May 12 – Secret Stages Festival, Birmingham Alabama
May 15 & 16 – Third Man Records – Jack White tour launch and summer sale (more on that below!)
May 18 – 20 – Hangout Fest, Gulf Shores Alabama
May 21 – End Of All Music, Oxford Mississippi
May 22 – Vintage Vinyl, St. Louis Missouri
May 24 – Scottish Rite Theatre, Detroit MI

And now, about that sale mentioned above! We’d like to send Jack off in style for his Blunderbuss tour with a little tailgate party here at Third Man Records on the dates of his Ryman shows. And by “party” we mean “sale”. But a FUN sale with lots of great stuff. The Rolling Record Store and some local food trucks will be parked in the lot, while in our Blue Room we’ll have tables upon tables of White Stripes, Raconteurs and Dead Weather merchandise.. all at a great discounted price. Everything from a wide assortment of T Shirts, to tiny red theramins, to buttons, bags and lots lots more. We hope any fans travelling to Nashville for what is sure to be two legendary nights at The Ryman will join us from 3pm to 7pm on May 15th and 16th.

Name That Movie

Have you seen the ads for the new book by Paul Rogers called Name That Movie? It looks great…

If you watched the video clip above, you know that he shows 6 drawings from a film, in sequence, no movie stars….and you have to name the movie. Easy enough…

Can you do this one?

I’m definitely adding this book to my ‘Want List’.

The Black Keys on No Reservations

I was able to check out a little cable TV the other day, and saw a preview that The Black Keys were going to be on a great show on the Travel Channel called Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations. I don’t have cable TV, but some episodes are on Netflix …if you have that. You’ll probably have to wait a while for this newer episode to be added to the queue though.

If you are not familiar with the show, I highly recommend it. One thing that I remember Anthony say that I totally agree with is “Be a traveler, not a tourist.” I can relate to that completely. I love to travel, but hate tourist traps. Here’s more info on Anthony -> wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Bourdain

I was able to find a clip of the show on YouTube, but you can watch the full episode here-> travelchannel.com/video/tony-and-the-black-keys
