Hip music review…Broken Bells – After the Disco

After_The_Disco_CoverI recently was able to pick up the latest release ‘After the Disco’ from ultimate hipster band Broken Bells. I feel a bit privileged about knowledge of this release due to James Mercer talking about it at the final show of The Shins latest tour which wrapped-up at The Norva Theater in Norfolk.

I was a bit hesitant when listening to this second full-lenght because I thought it could never live up to the genius which was the first Broken Bells release. I think I was also surprised at The Bee Gees sounding single ‘Holding on for Life‘ which came out prior to the rest of the record. Just to let you know…the whole CD does not sound like that.Holding_on_for_Life..and I’m not saying that’s a bad song either…

After the Disco is one of those CDs that just get better each time you play it. Since I’ve been playing it for a while now, I’ve achieved a level of nirvana while listening that is usually reserved for High Llamas and practitioners of transcendental meditation.

You can buy the release on iTunes here. I highly recommend you do.

Broken Bells recently performed on Late Show with David Letterman during Beatles week. Here’s their performance…

iTunes Free Single of the Week: Jake Bugg – Lightning Bolt

For those that use iTunes (doesn’t everyone?), the Free Single of the Week is Jake Bugg’s ‘Lightning Bolt’. You can download it free here –>itunes.apple.com/us/album/lightning-bolt-single/id620456099 in the U.S.

It amazes me that Jake Bugg is only 19 years old. I have t-shirts older than him!

I first became familiar with Jake Bugg after reading an awesome concert review (complete with excellent pictures) on the blog Every Record Tells A Story. You can read it here–> EveryRecordTellsAStory.com/2013/03/27/jake-bugg-live/ (This blog is full of great stories out of the UK. I highly recommend it.)

The first thing that strikes you when you see Jake Bugg live is that he reminds you of a sulky teenager (because he is one) in his Adidas trainers and Fred Perry shirt – but then he opens his mouth and out comes the most amazing voice. This is a voice that cuts through all the nonsense in the newspapers and leads you to ask “How does someone that young get to be so good?” ~ EveryRecordTellsAStory.com

Hip quote…Wishbone – Clutch

For Thanksgiving we had ‘tatas, succotash, and rudebagas.
Then came turkey from the oven.
Broke the wishbone. Covenants were sealed and set.
On the losing end of a wishbone and I won’t pretend not to mind.                           – Clutch ( Fallon/Sult/Maines/Gaster)

Hip lyrics…Losing My Edge

Quote

Losing My Edge by LCD Soundsystem:

Yeah, I’m losing my edge.
I’m losing my edge.
The kids are coming up from behind.
I’m losing my edge.
I’m losing my edge to the kids from France and from London.
But I was there.

I was there in 1968.
I was there at the first Can show in Cologne.
I’m losing my edge.
I’m losing my edge to the kids whose footsteps I hear when they get on the decks.
I’m losing my edge to the Internet seekers who can tell me every member of every good group from 1962 to 1978.
I’m losing my edge.

To all the kids in Tokyo and Berlin.
I’m losing my edge to the art-school Brooklynites in little jackets and borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered eighties.

But I’m losing my edge.
I’m losing my edge, but I was there.
I was there.
But I was there.

I’m losing my edge.
I’m losing my edge.
I can hear the footsteps every night on the decks.
But I was there.
I was there in 1974 at the first Suicide practices in a loft in New York City.
I was working on the organ sounds with much patience.
I was there when Captain Beefheart started up his first band.
I told him, “Don’t do it that way. You’ll never make a dime.”
I was there.
I was the first guy playing Daft Punk to the rock kids.
I played it at CBGB’s.
Everybody thought I was crazy.
We all know.
I was there.
I was there.
I’ve never been wrong.

I used to work in the record store.
I had everything before anyone.
I was there in the Paradise Garage DJ booth with Larry Levan.
I was there in Jamaica during the great sound clashes.
I woke up naked on the beach in Ibiza in 1988.

But I’m losing my edge to better-looking people with better ideas and more talent.
And they’re actually really, really nice.

I’m losing my edge.

I heard you have a compilation of every good song ever done by anybody. Every great song by the Beach Boys. All the underground hits. All the Modern Lovers tracks. I heard you have a vinyl of every Niagra record on German import. I heard that you have a white label of every seminal Detroit techno hit – 1985, ’86, ’87. I heard that you have a CD compilation of every good ’60s cut and another box set from the ’70s.

I hear you’re buying a synthesizer and an arpeggiator and are throwing your computer out the window because you want to make something real. You want to make a Yaz record.

I hear that you and your band have sold your guitars and bought turntables.
I hear that you and your band have sold your turntables and bought guitars.

I hear everybody that you know is more relevant than everybody that I know.

But have you seen my records? This Heat, Pere Ubu, Outsiders, Nation of Ulysses, Mars, The Trojans, The Black Dice, Todd Terry, the Germs, Section 25, Althea and Donna, Sexual Harrassment, a-ha, Pere Ubu, Dorothy Ashby, PIL, the Fania All-Stars, the Bar-Kays, the Human League, the Normal, Lou Reed, Scott Walker, Monks, Niagra,

Joy Division, Lower 48, the Association, Sun Ra,
Scientists, Royal Trux, 10cc,

Local news…Garbage @ National 9/14/12

Awesome band Garbage will be performing at The National Theater in Richmond, Virginia on Friday Sept. 14th. Tickets are $25 in advance (plus service charge).

“Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson has said that the band’s forthcoming album, ‘Not Your Kind Of People’, has been inspired by David Bowie, Siouxsie Sioux, and Cocteau Twins.

When asked if ‘Not Your Kind Of People’ saw them looking toward any new influences, Manson said she had been looking back to “all these people that built my musical fabric”. Butch Vig added that he’d taken inspiration from prog rock and the first Suicide album.

After being asked what they had been up to since their 2005 album ‘Bleed Like Me’, Manson said: “I don’t really know what I’ve been doing… We spent our time living life, then [we were] ready to record a record and here we are!”

Garbage release their fifth album ‘Not Your Kind Of People’ on May 14. Recorded in Atwater Village in Los Angeles, the album has been produced by Garbage and mixed by the band’s drummer Butch Vig.” – NME
