Lots of good shows/events added to our region recently…
- Free Slurpee Day is Friday July 11th. (Get it? 7/11? Happens every year.) at participating stores.
- Spoon with special opening guest Hamilton Leithauser (of The Walkmen) are playing a show on Saturday September 6th at The Norva in beautiful downtown Norfolk. Tickets are around $34 with the fees.
- Clutch are coming back to town to perform at The Norva on Friday September 26th. Tickets are about $27.
- über-hipster band Broken Bells are performing at The National Theater in Richmond, VA for those who would like to make a small road-trip. The show is Sunday September 28th and tickets are around $40. The opening guest is also Hamilton Leithauser.
I recently was able to pick up the latest release ‘After the Disco’ from ultimate hipster band Broken Bells. I feel a bit privileged about knowledge of this release due to James Mercer talking about it at the final show of The Shins latest tour which wrapped-up at The Norva Theater in Norfolk.
I was a bit hesitant when listening to this second full-lenght because I thought it could never live up to the genius which was the first Broken Bells release. I think I was also surprised at The Bee Gees sounding single ‘Holding on for Life‘ which came out prior to the rest of the record. Just to let you know…the whole CD does not sound like that...and I’m not saying that’s a bad song either…
After the Disco is one of those CDs that just get better each time you play it. Since I’ve been playing it for a while now, I’ve achieved a level of nirvana while listening that is usually reserved for High Llamas and practitioners of transcendental meditation.
You can buy the release on iTunes here. I highly recommend you do.
Broken Bells recently performed on Late Show with David Letterman during Beatles week. Here’s their performance…
Great to be back at HipsterApproved World Headquarters in scenic Ocean View, Virginia.
Anyway..my mailbox had some cool stuff in it… For example the new Soundgarden song ‘Live To Rise‘ available as a FREE download on iTunes. All hipsters have iTunes, right? The song is great! It’s off of the Avengers soundtrack.
Speaking of iTunes…Jack White is providing streaming of his entire debut album Blunderbuss – free for a limited time. I’ve been listening to it, and I really look forward to getting a copy of my own on April 24th 2012! It’s some of his best work…And that statement is huge!
Also, speaking of great new music…I’ve been listening to a lot of the new Shins release Port of Morrow. It’s genius. I was lucky enough to get the 4-track acoustic EP because I got it at an independent record store (Birdland in Va Beach). I recommend trying to get it.
