Local News…Richmond, VA voted next Hipster city

It seems Richmond, Virginia has won a poll that was put on by CultureMap that asked ‘Which city is going the be the next Hipster city?’

Besides Richmond, the other city choices were:

  • Chattanooga, TN
  • Asheville, NC
  • Burlington, VT
  • Detroit, MI
  • Pittsburgh, PA

It seems they think Austin, TX is loosing it’s edge, so it wasn’t even a choice. Richmond won with 72% of the votes.

Here’s what they had to say about Richmond at the site –

The Rumpus named Richmond one of the most inhabitable hipster cities for post-graduates (and it seems like every indie band you meet is from here).

Is that supposed to be a good thing?

Anyway..bring on the Music Festivals!

I already highly recommend the Watermelon Fest in the ‘hip’ neighborhood of Carytown.

Local News…Al Pacino postpones event in Norfolk

In case you haven’t already heard…ultimate ‘Hip’ movie actor Al Pacino is appearing at Norfolk’s Chrysler Hall on the new date of Thurs June 28th due to a conflict with a movie schedule. Tickets range in price from $45 to $125 (plus fees) depending on where you sit. If you already purchased tickets for the previously scheduled date, they will be honored at the door. No need to make an exchange. Questions? Call 282-2822.

His appearance is part of the Virginia Arts Festival, and here’s what they had to say about the show:

From Michael Corleone (The Godfather) to Tony Montana (Scarface) to his Academy Award-winning role as Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman, Al Pacino has created an unforgettable gallery of characters. In this riveting evening, Pacino shares backstage tales from a lifetime in the world of theater and film, clips of his films–some never seen before–and a question and answer session with you, the audience. Order early for this sure-to-sell-out event!

Sounds awesome! I don’t have tickets, but would LOVE to go. If someone could hook me up with a Comp ticket (plus 1?) that would be great! Email me at info@HipsterApproved.net

Hip Book Review…FUCK this book

Just got done checking out this awesome book called FUCK this book by Bodhi Oser published in 2005, but I only just found out about it. (I should get out more…) It is only photographs, no writing at all. And if you check out the website – FUCKthiswebsite.com you’ll see other submissions of photos very similar to what’s in this book. I think these are hilarious! And I love how they are street art.

It’s funny how we give so much power to a word. It’s pretty silly of people really. I recommend a movie called Fuck (2005) about the subject. I also recommend this YouTube video…it’s the best…

Jack White on SNL March 3rd!

Just got a message from Third Man Records letting me know that ultimate Hipster Jack White will be performing two songs from his new debut solo release called Blunberbuss on Saturday Night Live March 3rd. The first single ‘Love Interruption’ is available on iTunes now. The full release will be April 23rd.

Converse signs Gorillaz up to help sell Chuck Taylors

I just read about how Converse has this collaboration between the Gorillaz, James Murphy (of LCD Soundsystem), and Andre 3000 (of Outcast) recording a track called ‘DoYaThing’ to help sell some tennis shoes. Also, a video will be made by Gorillaz artist Jamie Hewlett. I’m really looking forward to this FREE DOWNLOAD in a couple of days!

Here’s a picture of the special shoe. Pretty sweet!

Local News…Whale in Ocean View!

Some weird local news…that is pretty un-hip actually…Hey local people – Have you seen the big dead whale that washed up in OV? I went and checked it out after getting a whiff of it when I was going to Farm Fresh for some groceries! It’s on the beach right near the public bathrooms and the parking lot. Man…it’s gross…

It got me thinking about when that dead whale washed up in Oregon a few years gone by….this was way before Portlandia…

Hipster art

I saw this article in the Huffington Post recently about hip artist Fabian Ciraolo who takes legendary people of the past (and present) and gives them a ‘Hip make-over’.

I’ve posted some examples, but you may want to check out his other stuff on his website….
