“I heard a joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he’s depressed. Says life is harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world. Doctor says, “Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go see him. That should pick you up.” Man bursts into tears. Says, “But doctor… I am Pagliacci.” Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.”
I came across this unauthorized (but very good) video about the Beastie Boys.
Though there is no Beastie Boys music on it, it has a lot of great interviews. Definitely worth checking out…
Here’s what it says on Vimeo about it:
An unauthorized documentary film packed with exclusive interviews
Hailing from NYC, the Beastie Boys have somehow managed to stay at the top for almost 20 years. Starting off as a Punk outfit, they soon changed direction and exploded in the mid 80’s as foul-mouthed novelty rappers. They have supported Madonna, made spoof music videos, learned to play instruments, gone back to their roots and more recently have been involved in political and social issues. This is the band who have done it all! Nobody expected the Beastie Boys to last, but they’ve matured into one of the most intriguing and influential acts on the planet.
‘Beastie Boys: Horseplay’ tells their incredible story, via interviews, rare footage and much, much more. From the start these boys were labeled as ‘no-hopes’, those least likely to survive the struggle to the top – but they proved their critics wrong. In a tale of break dancing, beer cans and Buddhism, you can only expect one thing – the unexpected.

And if you like that you have got to check out the infomercial for the ‘Action Suit’ by Mike D‘s X-Large Clothing.
This past Friday the 13th was the premier of the new film Hipster Holocaust in L.A.
Here’s the trailer…
I look forward to seeing this. What do you think?
Ultimate hipster director Wes Anderson has released a new poster for his upcoming film “Moonrise Kingdom” (co-written with Roman Coppola. I believe this is the first movie that Owen Wilson has not been a collaborator with Wes). From looking at the cast line-up, I’m sure it will be a hit. It is being released to theaters on May 16th 2012.

I have to give my seal of approval to the movie Blank City that has just been added to Netflix instant streaming. It is directed by Celine Danier.
Here’s what they have to say about the movie…
Filmmaker Celine Danhier directs this lively documentary that retraces the birth of the underground film movement in New York in the early 1980s, spurred by the work of artists like Richard Kern, Casandra Stark and John Waters. As part of what author and filmmaker Nick Zedd coined the Cinema of Transgression, these low-budget films were noted for being chock-full of explicit sex, gratuitous violence and dark humor.
I love this era of New York City. I have a few of the movies discussed in the film by Richard Kern and Nick Zedd, and they are awesome. I’m also a big fan of No Wave music, and Andy Warhol‘s Factory scene with the Velvet Underground, CBGBs, Lydia Lunch, Max’s Kansas City, Jean-Michel Basquiat and everything else from then…and it’s all discussed in this movie. I didn’t know Steve Buscemi had such a large role in it…
You must check it out…

In this riveting evening, Pacino shares backstage tales from a lifetime in the world of theater and film, clips of his films–some never seen before–and a question and answer session with you, the audience. Sounds awesome! I don’t have tickets, but would LOVE to go. If someone could hook me up with a Comp ticket (plus 1?) that would be great! Email me at info@HipsterApproved.net
A lot o’ people don’t realize what’s really going on. They view life as a bunch o’ unconnected incidents ‘n things. They don’t realize that there’s this, like, lattice o’ coincidence that lays on top o’ everything. Give you an example, show you what I mean: suppose you’re thinkin’ about a plate o’ shrimp. Suddenly someone’ll say, like, “plate,” or “shrimp,” or “plate o’ shrimp” out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin’ for one, either. It’s all part of a cosmic unconsciousness. ~ Miller
Got back to HipsterApproved Headquarters last night from the trek over to the West Coast. (pictures coming soon..have to get rid of the jet-lag first.) Was quite excited to find waiting in the inbox of my email a notice about the hippest band, Tool performing at Hampton Coliseum on Friday February 3rd.
Tickets go on-sale tomorrow, Saturday January 7th 10:00am. Tickets cost about $54 or $69 depending on where your seat is located.
Maynard James Keenan may be the hardest working man in show busniess. I know that Puscifer is currently touring, and A Perfect Circle just wrapped-up a tour not too long ago.
MJK also is busy making wine. If you haven’t seen the movie Blood Into Wine, you should definitely check it out. It’s currently available to stream from Netflix.
