About HipsterApproved.net

I like to think I know what a 'Hipster' is...but I wouldn't say I am one....I'm not going to let that stop me from blogging about them.

The Shins on SNL….

The Shins new line-up were great on Saturday Night Live last night.

Their new release, Port Of Morrow is coming to iTunes March 20th.

This just in…iTunes is letting you listen to the entire album for free…

From now until March 20, stream Port of Morrow for free. Anchored by the propulsive, harmony-heavy ‘Simple Song,’ The Shins’ fourth album showcases the kind of finely tuned songwriting strengths and ’60s-era arrangements that make the music of James Mercer so compelling. You can also pre-order the new album.

Hip book review…The Overrated Book

Just got done reading this huge book Chunklet presents The Overrated Book. Took me a while. It says this book weighs two pounds! It’s about 205 pages. This book is hilarious and not only would hipsters like this, but also rockers, punks, emos, as well as film geeks. Pretty much all music fans.

I’m not sure how I found out about this book, and I’ve never heard of the magazine, Chunklet, out of Athens, Georgia until I found this book. From what I understand, this is a collection of stories that have appeared in the magazine in the past. So it’s all new to me… And I plan on reading their other books as well.

The editor over at Chunklet is Henry H. Owings, and this book has a forward by Patton Oswalt.

When doing a search about this book, I came across these videos made by Henry that are awesome! They are about taking a group of Boy Scouts to the ‘hip SXSW Fest to obtain their ‘Rock ‘N Roll Merit Badge’. Check them out…

.

The audio in the 3rd video is messed up, but you still get the idea.

New Wes Anderson movie poster out today…

Ultimate hipster director Wes Anderson has released a new poster for his upcoming film “Moonrise Kingdom” (co-written with Roman Coppola. I believe this is the first movie that Owen Wilson has not been a collaborator with Wes). From looking at the cast line-up, I’m sure it will be a hit. It is being released to theaters on May 16th 2012.

Did you catch Jack White on SNL last night?

So were you able to watch Saturday Night Live last night to see Jack White perform songs from his forthcoming solo release ‘Blunderbuss’?

I think he was great! The first song he played was ‘Love Interruption’, the single that is currently available on iTunes. The song is an acoustic duet with Ruby Amanfu. Jack’s backing band was all female for this song.

The second song of the night was a rocker called ‘Sixteen Saltines’. This time Jack was on electric guitar with an all male backing band. At times his drummer would rock SO HARD that he had to stand up! You must check it out…

I would post the videos for the songs here, but NBC has some strict rules on copyrights and YouTube, so they are unavailable. I can only show you the hilarious promos for the show (Andy Samberg = comic genius), but you can see the two songs performed here at NBC.com -> nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/jack-white-love-interruption & nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/jack-white-sixteen-saltines.

One more thing…next week, March 10th…musical guest The Shins! With guest host Jonah Hill. Sounds like a good one!

New on Netflix…Blank City

I have to give my seal of approval to the movie Blank City that has just been added to Netflix instant streaming. It is directed by Celine Danier.

Here’s what they have to say about the movie…

Filmmaker Celine Danhier directs this lively documentary that retraces the birth of the underground film movement in New York in the early 1980s, spurred by the work of artists like Richard Kern, Casandra Stark and John Waters. As part of what author and filmmaker Nick Zedd coined the Cinema of Transgression, these low-budget films were noted for being chock-full of explicit sex, gratuitous violence and dark humor.

I love this era of New York City. I have a few of the movies discussed in the film by Richard Kern and Nick Zedd, and they are awesome. I’m also a big fan of No Wave music, and Andy Warhol‘s Factory scene with the Velvet Underground, CBGBs, Lydia Lunch, Max’s Kansas City, Jean-Michel Basquiat and everything else from then…and it’s all discussed in this movie. I didn’t know Steve Buscemi had such a large role in it…

Local News..Farmers Market is coming to Ocean View

Looks like the hipsters in Ocean View, Virginia will be able to grab their canvas bags and get some fresh, locally grown produce soon!

I got this email yesterday from Five Points Community Farm Market. These are the same people that put on the awesome Sustainable Living Fair at the ODU Webb Center a couple of weeks ago…

The Five Points Community Farm Market is partnering with the East Ocean View Community to provide a Farm Market satellite location in Ocean View! We are working out all the details as to start dates, hours, exact location and the season, but  plans are to have an outdoor market with a C.S.A. pick up for the folks in Ocean View! Are we crazy or what?! We are excited about getting good food to the good people in Ocean View neighborhoods. And yes, once the details are worked out, we will be pursuing all the appropriate licenses, permits and approvals required for those who may be wondering! More to come!

For those that are new to the whole neighborhood farmers market thing….C.S.A. stands for Community-Supported Agriculture. If you’re not familiar with that, check out what Christian Lander, author of the hilarious book Whiter Shades of Pale had to say about it here. Just substitute the word ‘hipster’ for when he says ‘white people’…OK?

It’s basically where a person pays an up-front fee to get fresh produce from local farms held for them each week at the farmers market. It’s also at a great savings if you were to go buy the items individually. And the items change with the seasons…

It’s a good thing.

Local News…Richmond, VA voted next Hipster city

It seems Richmond, Virginia has won a poll that was put on by CultureMap that asked ‘Which city is going the be the next Hipster city?’

Besides Richmond, the other city choices were:

  • Chattanooga, TN
  • Asheville, NC
  • Burlington, VT
  • Detroit, MI
  • Pittsburgh, PA

It seems they think Austin, TX is loosing it’s edge, so it wasn’t even a choice. Richmond won with 72% of the votes.

Here’s what they had to say about Richmond at the site –

The Rumpus named Richmond one of the most inhabitable hipster cities for post-graduates (and it seems like every indie band you meet is from here).

Is that supposed to be a good thing?

Anyway..bring on the Music Festivals!

I already highly recommend the Watermelon Fest in the ‘hip’ neighborhood of Carytown.
