For the local Hipsters…have you tried this pizza? It’s awesome!
I just wanted to let all the Hipsters know that Record Store Day is coming up. It is Saturday April 21, 2012.
Our local stores that are participating are Skinnies in Norfolk, AFK Records, and Birdland in Va Beach. Oh yeah…and Fantasy in Newport News. I think everyone, not just Hipsters, should support our local record stores. There’s a great documentary I saw about this subject called ‘I Need That Record!‘ that I recommend you see.
While checking out the RSD site I came across this awesome video released by KCRW about vinyl records that I found very entertaining because I understand where these guys are coming from…
Please support local businesses, or we’ll be taken over by the Man…in a big box.
Hey…just wanted to send a reminder to those hipsters that wait to get their ticket until the day of the show…the Black Keys are at the Ted Constant Center in Norfolk, VA tomorrow March 23 2012. Tickets are a whopping $47.50 or $42.50 depending on where you sit. Yikes!
This is on the Ted’s website:
“Make sure to come out early for our Rockin’ Pre Show prior to The Black Keys Concert! Party starts at 6:00pm and will be located outside on the plaza of The Constant Center. Food and beverage will be available for purchase. Live music, corn hole and fun entertainment for all will be provided!
The first 250 fans to the Pre Show will also get a free guitar pick! Don’t miss your chance to walk away with some awesome gear!”
I also highly recommend watching the opening band, the Arctic Monkeys.
If someone could get me on the guest-list (plus 1?), I’d love to write a review of the show. Just send me an email to info@HipsterApproved.net for info. Thanks!
I just wanted to send a reminder about the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in Ocean View this Saturday March 17th.
.
That is the day when Ocean View gets flooded with Hipsters showing off their green fashion sense.
.
Remember to arrive early due to the roads being closed and limited parking. Be prepared to walk.
.
The parade starts at 10am and you can get the Parade Flyer here.
If you go to the parade and take any good pictures of our local hipster scene, send them to HipsterApproved and it may get posted!
Looks like the hipsters in Ocean View, Virginia will be able to grab their canvas bags and get some fresh, locally grown produce soon!
I got this email yesterday from Five Points Community Farm Market. These are the same people that put on the awesome Sustainable Living Fair at the ODU Webb Center a couple of weeks ago…
The Five Points Community Farm Market is partnering with the East Ocean View Community to provide a Farm Market satellite location in Ocean View! We are working out all the details as to start dates, hours, exact location and the season, but plans are to have an outdoor market with a C.S.A. pick up for the folks in Ocean View! Are we crazy or what?! We are excited about getting good food to the good people in Ocean View neighborhoods. And yes, once the details are worked out, we will be pursuing all the appropriate licenses, permits and approvals required for those who may be wondering! More to come!
For those that are new to the whole neighborhood farmers market thing….C.S.A. stands for Community-Supported Agriculture. If you’re not familiar with that, check out what Christian Lander, author of the hilarious book Whiter Shades of Pale had to say about it here.
Just substitute the word ‘hipster’ for when he says ‘white people’…OK?
It’s basically where a person pays an up-front fee to get fresh produce from local farms held for them each week at the farmers market. It’s also at a great savings if you were to go buy the items individually. And the items change with the seasons…
It’s a good thing.
It seems Richmond, Virginia has won a poll that was put on by CultureMap that asked ‘Which city is going the be the next Hipster city?’
Besides Richmond, the other city choices were:
It seems they think Austin, TX is loosing it’s edge, so it wasn’t even a choice. Richmond won with 72% of the votes.
Here’s what they had to say about Richmond at the site –
The Rumpus named Richmond one of the most inhabitable hipster cities for post-graduates (and it seems like every indie band you meet is from here).
Is that supposed to be a good thing?
Anyway..bring on the Music Festivals!
I already highly recommend the Watermelon Fest in the ‘hip’ neighborhood of Carytown.
In case you haven’t already heard…ultimate ‘Hip’ movie actor Al Pacino is appearing at Norfolk’s Chrysler Hall on the new date of Thurs June 28th due to a conflict with a movie schedule. Tickets range in price from $45 to $125 (plus fees) depending on where you sit. If you already purchased tickets for the previously scheduled date, they will be honored at the door. No need to make an exchange. Questions? Call 282-2822.
His appearance is part of the Virginia Arts Festival, and here’s what they had to say about the show:
From Michael Corleone (The Godfather) to Tony Montana (Scarface) to his Academy Award-winning role as Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman, Al Pacino has created an unforgettable gallery of characters. In this riveting evening, Pacino shares backstage tales from a lifetime in the world of theater and film, clips of his films–some never seen before–and a question and answer session with you, the audience. Order early for this sure-to-sell-out event!
Sounds awesome! I don’t have tickets, but would LOVE to go. If someone could hook me up with a Comp ticket (plus 1?) that would be great! Email me at info@HipsterApproved.net
Some weird local news…that is pretty un-hip actually…Hey local people – Have you seen the big dead whale that washed up in OV? I went and checked it out after getting a whiff of it when I was going to Farm Fresh for some groceries! It’s on the beach right near the public bathrooms and the parking lot. Man…it’s gross…
It got me thinking about when that dead whale washed up in Oregon a few years gone by….this was way before Portlandia…
Hip band Clutch is performing at the Norva Theater in downtown Norfolk, Virginia on Tue Apr 10th. Tickets go on-sale Fri 2/28 at 10:am and are $19 (plus $6.50 in fees, so $25.50) in advance, or $23 (plus fees) the day of the show.
I don’t have definite plans to go to this show as of yet, but if someone could hook me up with a comp ticket or two, that would be great! I’d love to write up a review of this show. Get ahold of me at info@HipsterApproved.net
