About Sigur Ros:
Jón Þór “Jónsi” Birgisson (guitar and vocals), Georg Hólm (bass) and Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson (drums) formed the group in Reykjavík in August 1994. Their name is Icelandic wordplay: while the individual words Sigur and Rós mean, respectively, Victory and Rose, “Victory Rose” wouldn’t be grammatically correct; the name is actually borrowed from Jónsi’s younger sister Sigurrós, who was born the same day as the band was formed, and then split into two words. They soon won a record deal with the local Sugarcubes-owned record label, Bad Taste. In 1997, they released Von, meaning “hope” and in 1998 a remix collection named Von brigði. This name is also Icelandic wordplay: Vonbrigði means “disappointment”, but Von brigði means “variations on Von”. The band was joined by Kjartan Sveinsson on keyboards in 1998. He is the only member of Sigur Rós with musical training, and has contributed most of the orchestral and string arrangements for their later work.

Local News..Farmers Market is coming to Ocean View

Looks like the hipsters in Ocean View, Virginia will be able to grab their canvas bags and get some fresh, locally grown produce soon!

I got this email yesterday from Five Points Community Farm Market. These are the same people that put on the awesome Sustainable Living Fair at the ODU Webb Center a couple of weeks ago…

The Five Points Community Farm Market is partnering with the East Ocean View Community to provide a Farm Market satellite location in Ocean View! We are working out all the details as to start dates, hours, exact location and the season, but  plans are to have an outdoor market with a C.S.A. pick up for the folks in Ocean View! Are we crazy or what?! We are excited about getting good food to the good people in Ocean View neighborhoods. And yes, once the details are worked out, we will be pursuing all the appropriate licenses, permits and approvals required for those who may be wondering! More to come!

For those that are new to the whole neighborhood farmers market thing….C.S.A. stands for Community-Supported Agriculture. If you’re not familiar with that, check out what Christian Lander, author of the hilarious book Whiter Shades of Pale had to say about it here. Just substitute the word ‘hipster’ for when he says ‘white people’…OK?

It’s basically where a person pays an up-front fee to get fresh produce from local farms held for them each week at the farmers market. It’s also at a great savings if you were to go buy the items individually. And the items change with the seasons…

It’s a good thing.

Local News: Sustainable Living Fair @ ODU this weekend

The 3rd annual Sustainable Living Fair is coming to the Webb Center at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia this weekend, Sat Feb 18 10am and Sun the 19th 11am.

This event is totally free (even the parking) with the exception of the optional Rain Barrel Workshop. There is a fee for the cost of the items to make a rain barrel if you like, but you get to take it home with you after you make it. (Which I did last year.) I liked my rain barrel SO much I contacted the instructor, Mike and bought another one! You do have to register and pre-pay, so go to the website if you’d like one.

The Keynote this year is Tony Geraci.  He’s a film maker, chef, and healthy food activist. He is debuting his new documentary — Cafeteria Man , for the first time in Hampton Roads on Saturday at 5pm.

Hipster band ‘Cake’ perform tonight in Norfolk 12-1-11

In local news…96X FM is hosting a concert tonight at the Ted at ODU.

Hipster bands Cake, Cage The Elephant, and Bush are performing. There are a few other bands I haven’t really heard of…and some I’ve only heard on SNL, like Foster The People. But I’m sure some Hipsters really like them…

Anyway tickets were hella expensive plus a service charge. Doors open at 5pm, so that’s in just a couple of hours. If I were going…I’d just show up at the door and see if anyone has any extra tickets they’d like to sell cheap instead of them loosing their money on. But that’s just me….

I can’t make it to this show, but if there’s anyone out there that goes and would like to be a contributor to HipsterApproved.net just let me know. Leave a comment or email me at info@hipsterapproved.net
